Too much time on my hands
After watching Monster awhile back, I decided I needed to watch uplifting movies that would make me feel good about life instead of hopeless about life. Since then I've watched Return to Me with David Duchovny and Minnie Driver, it was a predictable love story, but I liked it. I liked that the female lead wasn't totally flighty, overly peppy, and shallowly deep, like other romantic comedies. She was just her, a normal woman, except for the ridiculous plot line of having received the heart of the male leads dead wife. It's not meant to be taken too seriously.I also watched Chocolat, now that was a good movie. But what's up with putting Johnny Depp all over the box, when his role isn't that big? Well I guess he got me to want to watch it in the first place right? He's hot. I loved the character played by Juliet Binoche, she kicked ass. Single mother with an independent spirit, and good taste (the chocolate and Johnny Depp) She's pretty and looks very together, I liked the confidence and humanity of the role. Good movie, good visuals of chocolate, they all looked so pretty. I guess I'm pretty simple I like milk chocolate with nuts (almonds or peanuts). The chocolate milk stuff in the movie looked gross though, it was really thick and dark, looked like hershey's syrup.
Snow Falling on Cedars, what can I say, not what I expected. From the previews I had watched from what seems like a million years ago, I got the idea that this was a timeless classic love story. I guess I thought it was about how Ethan Hawke and Youki Kudoh have an enduring love for each other. Man was I wrong, yes they do have a love affair, but it ends abruptly. The character Hatsue (Kudoh) ends the relationship saying in a letter to Ishmael(Hawke) something like - while I was lying there with my skin against your skin, listening to your heartbeat, I knew positively that I loved you and did not love you at the same time. Ishmael has to make a decision about exposing information about a murder that could acquit Hatsue's husband from a possible conviction. Ishmael is still deeply in love with Hatsue even though she's now married, I think deep in his mind Ishmael thinks things could be rekindled if her husband was out of the way. Its a real love story, but its not gritty depressing realism, it's a kind of calm, this is the way its supposed to be, so deal with it realism. I absolutely give it a thumbs up, not what I expected, it was better!
And last but not least I watched I Love You, I Love You Not which I had never heard of, but was interested in it because I like Claire Danes, and recently became interested in Jude Law (saw him on Inside the Actors Studio). I think that the movie had multiple personalities because the two storylines seemed awkward next to each other. One a budding romance, the other a somewhat strange flashback into the Jewish holocaust. I was sad Claire had to be kinda weird girl in this movie and that Jude Law would ultimately let her down. But I guess sometimes people have to just walk to the other side of the street to avoid speaking with you. Harsh. Strange coming of age story.
My plan now is to watch as many more movies cause they are so much fun, but maybe I will move out of the love stories. =)
